Destination
Located in southern Tanzania, Mikumi National Park spans 3,230 square kilometers, roughly a four-hour drive from Dar es Salaam. Bordered by the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast and the Rubeho Mountains to the northwest, the park’s landscape features the expansive Mkata Floodplain, dotted with acacia trees, grasslands, and seasonal swamps. Its proximity to the Tanzania-Zambia Highway makes it an accessible gateway to the south’s wild wonders.
Attractions
Mikumi is a haven for classic safari wildlife—lions roam the plains, often spotted near waterholes, while elephants, zebras, and giraffes graze the floodplain. Buffalo herds and elusive leopards add to the mix, alongside over 400 bird species, including lilac-breasted rollers and yellow-throated longclaws. The park’s open terrain offers excellent game viewing, with hippo pools and scenic viewpoints enhancing the experience.
Best Time to Visit
June to October, the dry season, is optimal for wildlife spotting, as animals gather around shrinking water sources and vegetation thins out. The wet season (November to May) transforms the park into a lush, green expanse, ideal for birdwatching and fewer crowds, though muddy roads may pose challenges
